The Met Office has issued a cold weather health alert for large parts of the UK this week as freezing temperatures are set to hit.
A yellow health alert has been issued between Friday and Monday as the weather could pose a risk to life for vulnerable people.
The mercury could fall to as low as -2C in same place on Friday evening into Saturday and Birmingham and Manchester will be hit with freezing weather.
The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for rain in Scotland, Aberdeenshire and Fife until midnight on Wednesday.
Grahame Madge, a Met Office spokesman, said, “There is an Arctic Maritime airmass that will be moving south during this week, bringing a colder influence to the UK’s weather – we are already issuing snow and ice warnings for northern Britain.
“This colder spell is likely to be brief as longer-range indications are from later in the weekend that the weather will be more dominated by Atlantic conditions.”
On hills above 300 metres snow may fall as well as on low ground by Friday morning, temperatures will quickly change which could lead to ice.
Jason Kelly, Met Office chief forecaster said, “Any settling snow will mainly be confined to high ground. Locations of above 200 metres in Scotland and northern England may see 2-5cm of snow, but those locations above 300 metres may see double those amounts, up to 10 cm.
“As the rain and snow clears south, temperatures will fall quickly under the clear skies which could lead to ice forming on untreated surfaces.”
