Mark Epstein, brother of disgraced billionaire and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein spoke to Al Arabiya English in an exclusive interview.
Speaking from an undisclosed location for security concerns Mark told presenter Micheal Prendergast his thoughts on how he believes his brother died, if President Trump should release the Epstein files and Mark’s account of Jeffrey’s relationship with Trump.
Mark speaks out as questions and conspiracy theories around the case continue to surface, years after Jeffrey’s death by suicide in a Manhattan jail in August 2019.
On finding out how his brother died he said, “I heard it on the morning he was found dead. I was having breakfast at a hotel and the television was on and Jeffrey’s picutre came on and they said he was found dead by suicide. The government didn’t notify me as they said they did. I learnt about it on CNN.”
He does not believe his brother died by suicide, “At the time I did. I had no reason to doubt it. He was in jail, he was facing a potential long prison term and I knew he wouldn’t want to do that. He didn’t have any children and our parents were already gone. The next day they did the autopsy. I went to identify his body. They [the pathologists] said they couldn’t call it a suicide as it looked too much like a homicide.”
He said what he thinks happened to his brother, “He was killed in the cell. They called it by suicide because it stops any investigation. This has never been investigated as a potential homicide. There were a dozen other prisoners on the same tier as Jeffrey. It was a cover up. By calling it a suicide they don’t investigate as a homocide.”
He strongly believes the CCTV was ‘edited’ “I know the tape has been edited. It’s not raw footage, investigators say. It was priced together by more than one feed. At the beginning of the video they talk about Jeffrey being walked into his cell. You can’t tell if that’s Jeffrey or not. You can’t make out who that person is. You don’t just walk into Jeffrey’s cell. You can’t casually walk in.
“They weren’t the doors to his cell and they’ve shown you can’t get to the cell door out of camera range. I don’t know what footage attorney general Bill Barr was referring to. Knowing that there were other prisoners, that could have killed somebody. Maybe Bill Barr wants to reevaluate his conclusion because he’s looking pretty foolish now.”
He gave his opinion over whether it was suicide, “I don’t speculate. I stick to facts. If this was a true homicide investigation, those are the questions they will look for.
“Who did it? And who would have the ability to orchestrate murder like that in a federal prison?
“Who would have the ability to orchestrate the cover up that the government is obviously doing? When they did the initial autopsy both of the pathologists said it was more likely a homicide than a suicide. That doesn’t appear in any of the reports. No one talks about that, they gloss over it, negating what these two highly qualified professionals said.”
He explained the relationship between Epstein and Trump, he said, “They were very friendly. Everyone who was around knew they were very friendly. Jeffrey used to speak about times he spent with Trump.
“Trump was in Jeffrey’s office quite a number of times. The people who worked in his office could testify to that. I don’t know why he [Trump] said he was never there because that’s a very provable lie. They were good friends. They used to travel on each other’s planes. They used to spend time together.
“There’s lots of photographs of Jeffrey at Mar-A-Lago at different events and Trump’s wedding. For him [Trump] to deny they were friends, is a big lie.”
Speaking about Epstein being friends with Bill Clinton, “I don’t know. We didn’t see each other very much even though we were always in communication. Jeffrey was a personable guy who travelled in those circles and he met a lot of people in the work he did and he was in that circle so I don’t find that unusual.”
When asked should Trump release the Epstein files he said, “They’re obviously hiding something. Because if this was clearly a suicide and there was nothing damaging, why not release everything? Why all this cover up? It doesn’t make any sense.
He was asked if his brother confided with him to mention his crimes, “Yes in 2006 when he first got in trouble. He asked me to come talk to him and I went to see him. He told me then he was in trouble because he was with girls who were too young. He admitted he was stupid and he wanted me to hear it from him so I didn’t hear it on the news. I wasn’t happy about it. I believe in consequences and ramifications for your actions. He got into trouble, so he was going to have to pay the price, I didn’t think it was going to be his life.”
When asked over his life post his brother’s death, “I did get death threats. The question now is. Who killed him? Why was he killed? Who actually pulled the trigger? Who sanctioned this? The investigation should be reopened as a murder case. Who’s going to investigate if the Department of Justice is covering this up? Real shame Americans can’t get an honest investigation. Jeffrey and I were not in each other’s wills. I didn’t need his money, he didn’t need mine. All of his assets went into a trust. I am not a trustee. We still don’t know about JFK or Martin Luther King – maybe this will go down in history as one of those mysteries.”
He was finally asked if he has concerns for his safety, “No, I’m not afraid for my life. Like crossing the street you look both ways but I am being cautious.”
