The US President elect Donald Trump has told allies that they must raise their defence spending and “NATO should have 5%” of their GDP.

Trump has said that NATO must raise their defence spending to up their game on security and this echoes what the NATO chief Mark Rutte has been insisting.

Allies are proposing to spend 3% by 2030 which is far below what Trump is strongly advising as he is trying to put incentives for the 32-members of the alliance to take more responsibility for their security.

Poland spends the largest proportion on defence of 4.12% in 2024, whilst the US spends 3.38% of their GDO and Estonia spends 3.43%, the UK is only spending 2%.

Ellwood warns UK is ‘vulnerable’ to a Russia missile attack

On Tuesday, Tobias Ellwood the former Defence Secretary has issued a warning shot to the government that the UK is “vulnerable” to a Russian missile attack.

Ellwood who is the former chairman of the parliamentary defence committee warned the “threat looks far more hostile.”

He said that Vladimir Putin’s long-range cruise missiles could hit the UK within 30 minutes and warned that Russian warplanes have increased their aggression, meaning an attack is more likely on British soil.

Writing in the Daily Mail Ellwood said, “As a former defence minister on the duty roster, I had to approve take off on more than one occasion – usually in response to Russian aircraft buzzing in our airspace. Today, the air threat looks far more hostile, complex and unpredictable.”

Last February Trump warned that he will “encourage” Russia “to do whatever the hell” they want to any NATO country if they do not meet the spending guidelines on defence if he is re-elected.

Speaking in South Carolina Trump told a crowd, “I said, ‘Everybody’s gonna pay.’ They said, ‘Well, if we don’t pay, are you still going to protect us?’ I said, ‘Absolutely not.’ They couldn’t believe the answer.”

Trump said that “one of the Presidents of a big country” had asked him if America would still defend them if Russia invaded and they “don’t pay.”

Trump said that he would encourage Russia “to do whatever the hell they want. You got to pay. You got to pay your bills.”
