A major police operation is underway in Switzerland after three people were stabbed at a busy railway station in the early hours of the morning, prompting a large-scale security response and the cordoning off of surrounding areas.

The attack took place at Winterthur railway station shortly after 6.30 am, according to local police and Swiss media reports.

Emergency services were called to the scene after multiple reports of a knife attack in and around the station underpass area, with officers arriving to find several injured victims.

Three people — aged 28, 43 and 52 — were taken to the hospital with injuries. All are understood to be Swiss nationals and are currently receiving treatment, according to the Zurich cantonal police.

A 31-year-old suspect was arrested at the scene shortly after the incident. Police have confirmed he is a Swiss national.

Local media reported that the alleged attacker shouted “Allahu Akbar” during the incident, although police have said the motive remains under investigation and have not formally confirmed the circumstances surrounding the attack.

According to reports from Swiss newspapers, a video circulating online appears to show a man running from the station while shouting the phrase. Authorities have not verified the footage.

Witnesses described a rapid and chaotic scene unfolding near the station entrance and underpass, with commuters and bystanders fleeing as the attack developed.

Local reporting also suggested that a class of schoolchildren was nearby at the time, with a teacher reportedly shielding pupils as the incident unfolded.

Police sealed off multiple areas around the station as forensic officers began examining the scene, with three separate cordons reportedly established in the vicinity of the underpass.

A spokesperson for the Zurich cantonal police said the suspect was arrested shortly after the attack and remains in custody while investigators work to establish the motive and sequence of events.

Officials stressed that enquiries are ongoing and urged the public not to speculate as they continue to gather evidence, including witness statements and available CCTV footage.

The station disruption caused significant delays to rail services in the area, with commuters advised to avoid the immediate vicinity while the investigation continues.
