Starmer urged to intervene as Rachel Reeves is putting our ‘troops at risk’

Britain’s armed forces are facing a £28 billion funding shortfall, and critics say Sir Keir Starmer must order Chancellor Rachel Reeves to act — or risk leaving the country’s troops under-equipped amid rising global tensions.

Labour has pledged to spend 2.5% of GDP on defence by 2027, but defence chiefs warn this is nowhere near enough to meet operational needs.

Meanwhile, Donald Trump has demanded 5% from NATO allies, including the UK, putting pressure on Britain to increase military spending.

“We cannot wait until the next election — the armed forces need funding now,” said a senior defence analyst.

Despite the warnings, Reeves has ruled out increasing the Ministry of Defence budget this year, sparking outrage among military leaders.

Sources suggest critical procurement programs could face severe delays, threatening the readiness of troops stationed at home and abroad.

Delays to weapons programs and training are already being felt, and experts warn that the UK risks being under-prepared for emergencies abroad.

With the Chancellor delaying vital investment this will lead to weapons programs being delayed, military operational readiness under threat and procurement cuts loom.

Insiders say Starmer is under mounting pressure to intervene directly, with public opinion increasingly concerned about Britain’s ability to defend itself and meet NATO commitments.

Defence experts warn that without urgent action, the UK could be caught unprepared in any international crisis.

“Our armed forces cannot be left short-changed while global threats rise,” added another military source.

The clock is ticking. With tensions in Europe and beyond growing fast, failure to fund the military could have serious consequences for national security, insiders warn.
