Spy chief warns Putin’s hybrid attacks on Europe is ‘reconnaissance by battle’

Vladimir Putin’s hybrid attacks on Europe are being classed as “reconnaissance by battle” by Ukraine’s spy chief, Kyrylo Budanov.

Putin’s goal is to convince ordinary Russian’s that Europe is not strong and is worthless by conducting the attacks on the continent.

Russia’s attacks include acts of sabotage, arson on a British warehouse, cyberattacks, drone incursions and deliberate acts of violating European airspace, Budanov told a journalist which was published by II Foglio, saying the “answer is simple.”

The Ukrainian spy chief said, “In military science, this type of attack is called ‘reconnaissance by battle,’ and there are two, or rather three, objectives, though one of them is more psychological and for internal use: Putin is preparing Russians; he wants to destroy in their minds the idea that Europe is worth anything, that Europe is strong.”

By deliberately violating sovereign airspace Putin is testing the EU, politically and with a military challenge.

Budanov continued, “We see that the Russians aim to stir anti-war sentiment in European countries and within your public opinion.

“For them, the benefit is twofold: if you, Europeans, grow tired of the war, the aid coming to us, to Ukraine, will be reduced.

“At the same time, Russians spread the idea among European citizens that it’s not even worth starting a war against Russia. That’s not my opinion, that’s the Russian perspective on the matter.”

The journalist asked how this evaluated the continent’s response to this clear 2double test,” he laughed and the conversation moved on.

Earlier this month the spy chief has warned the EU and NATO that if the Kremlin is left unchecked hybrid aggression will continue.

The head of the Main Intelligence Agency (GUR) of the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense Budanov is saying that the Kremlin is not feeling any resistance and is warning hybrid warfare will spread and intensify against the EU and NATO.

Budanov said, “Let’s have no illusions. Putin’s true intentions are to continue and intensify aggression.

“His current targets are the European Union and NATO countries, which the Kremlin sees as the main threat to the rule of the Russian authoritarian regime.

“Currently, only the first stages of the ‘hybrid war’ doctrine are apparently being implemented in Europe. If the Kremlin isn’t stopped and given a decisive and painful rebuff, hybrid aggression against EU and NATO countries will only spread and intensify.”
