Two Spanish Eurofighter Typhoons were scrambled after two Russian warplanes violated Lithuanian airspace on Thursday.
A Russian SU-30 fighter jet and an IL-78 refuelling aircraft entered Lithuanian airspace.
It is believed the two warplanes were undertaking refuelling exercises in the Kaliningrad region.
Lithuania shares a 171 border with Kaliningrad which is a major military hub and stocked up with nuclear capable missiles.
Lithuania’s President Gitanas Nausėda slammed Russia over their “gross violation of international law.”
He said, “We condemn Russia’s actions and the incursion of military aircraft into our airspace.
“We see that these incidents have been increasing recently – not only in Lithuania.”
The EU country’s Prime Minister Inga Ruginienė said Russia is a “terrorist state.”
She said, “This incident once again shows that Russia is behaving like a terrorist state, disregarding international law and the security of neighbouring countries.
“However, such actions will not affect us – Lithuania remains strong, united and ready to defend itself.”
