Retail sales rise more than expected in November

Retail sales grew 1.4 per cent in November compared with October, the Office for National Statistics said today, adding Black Friday sales helped push up retail sales in November.

“Retailers reported strong growth on the month due to Black Friday promotions in November, which continues the shifting pattern in consumer spending to sales occurring earlier in the year,” it said.

Meanwhile, online sales accounted for more than a fifth of all retailing for the first time.

Commenting on today’s data, Richard Stables, CEO of Kelkoo, said: “Bricks and mortar retailers endured a disastrous Black Friday as shoppers abandoned the high street, so it’s no surprise that online sales now accounts for a record segment of the UK’s retail market – surpassing 20% of the total sales figure for the first time. The challenge high street retailers face is ensuring that they have learnt from Black Friday and offer a user experience that customers actually want. ”

“Although it’s not all rosy for online retailers – Asos’ financial performance is proof of that – high street retailers have to embrace ecommerce to ensure they remain competitive and are able to attract consumers.”
