Chris Reynolds owns a PR company with his wife. He uses PayPal, and has done for the last decade. There’s nothing particularly exceptional about either of those things.

Except that when Chris opened his PayPal account earlier this week, he was “quite surprised” to discover he had become the richest person in the world, with a balance of $92,233,720,368,547,800 ($92 quadrillion).

This was, no doubt, particularly surprising since the global economy in its entirety is estimated to be worth about $85 trillion, around 1,085 times less than Chris’s new-found fortune.

PayPal had accredited his account incorrectly, and soon corrected the error.

US-based Chris told the Philadelphia Daily News: “At first I thought that I owed quadrillions. It was quite a big surprise.”
