Madrid declares ‘state of alert’ as more than 1,000 Covid-19 new cases in one day

The Spanish capital are to declare a state of emergency after Madrid announced 1,063 new cases of coronavirus in just one day, totalling 2,078 cases.

Spanish health authorities published new figures on Friday and confirmed 4,209 total cases of coronavirus, with a death toll of 120.

Spain’s television news said a “state of alert” will be on e of the three stages of a state of emergency, which includes ordering evacuations and wide quarantining measures.

Spain’s TVE said Madrid are to close all restaurants, bars and shops over the coronavirus epidemic from Saturday. Only supermarkets and pharmacies will remain open.

The British Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO) issued a warning to Brits travelling to parts of Spain on Friday, advising against all but essential travel to certain regions.

The FCO has advised to avoid areas in Madrid, La Rioja and the municipalities of La Bastida, Vitoria and Miranda de Ebro.

Spain announced they have had an almost 50% increase of coronavirus cases in just 24 hours, Madrid and the surrounding region is now 2,000 confirmed cases of coronavirus.

The popular holiday destination that sees hundreds of thousands of Brits visit ever year,  now has had 90 deaths due to coronavirus. Spain borders France which has 2,879 confirmed cases and a total of 61 deaths, up be almost 40 in one week.

Spain has the second highest number of coronavirus cases in Europe after Italy, the hardest hit regions are Madrid, the Basque Country and La Rioja.

Spain are fearing an Italy like coronavirus outbreak as confirmed cases on Monday rocketed by 362 cases in one day.

The Mayor of New York, Bill de Blasio also declared a state of emergency in the city over the deepening deadly coronavirus outbreak.

On Thursday the New York Mayor said the last 24 hours have been “very sobering”” and said the world has “turned upside down” in just one day.
