The Mayor of London Sadiq Khan has declared a major incident in the capital as in 24 hours there has been “more than 26,000 infections.”

Khan said, “In the last 24 hours, we have had the largest number of new cases since the pandemic began, more than 26,000.

“Hospital admissions are going up but also staff absences are going up by massive levels, so I have taken the decision, along with our partners, to declare a major incident.”

Khan has spoken to the NHS, fire service and councils over the highly transmissible Omicron variant which has risen today by more than 10,000 cases in the UK.

Khan said, “This is a statement of how serious things are, but also it means rather than different public authorities working separately we will be working together through both the London Resilience Forum and also through the strategic co-ordinating group.”

Over the last week, more than 70,000 Covid infections were reported in the capital and Khan said he is “incredibly worried” with the rise in infections and warned that hospital admissions are on the rise.

Khan said, “If we were speaking a few weeks ago, London had the fewest cases in the country. Now we’re the region with the largest number of cases.”
