On Saturday France recorded a new daily record with 16,972 confirmed coronavirus cases in just 24 hours, which is up by 5,000 from the previous day.
In the last seven days 4,087 people were admitted to hospital, with 849 patients placed in intensive care units.
The French Health Minister Olivier Veran warned that Paris and nearby suburbs could be placed on a “maximum alert zone” which will result in bars, and large gatherings including “family parties” being banned.
Veran said that the French maximum alert level means that “the risk of hospital saturation is very high.”
France is still “in the phase of an aggravation of the situation,” as there are signs coronavirus infection rates are growing in Marseille, Bordeaux and Nice.
