Explosions rock Moscow high-rise days before Putin’s Victory Day parade

A drone strike has hit a high-rise residential building in Moscow overnight, marking one of the most significant penetrations into the Russian capital since the start of the war in Ukraine.

Russian Telegram channels and local media reported that the strike damaged the upper floors of a residential tower in the west of the city, with debris scattered across the surrounding streets. Emergency services were seen responding at the scene.

The alleged attack comes amid an intensification of Ukrainian long-range drone operations inside Russia, and less than a week before Russia’s Victory Day celebrations on May 9 — a key annual event used by the Kremlin to project military strength and national unity, the Kyiv Independent reported.

Videos circulating on social media appear to show a drone flying at low altitude towards Moscow shortly before 1 am local time, followed by loud explosions reported by residents across parts of the capital.

The building reportedly struck has been identified in Russian media as the Mosfilm Tower, a luxury residential complex located in western Moscow, approximately seven kilometres from the Kremlin and close to key government and defence sites.

If confirmed, the incident would represent one of the deepest reported strikes into Moscow’s residential core since the war began.

Moscow mayor Sergey Sobyanin confirmed that drones had been intercepted over the capital and said no casualties had been reported. Russian authorities claimed that air defence systems downed multiple incoming drones.

The extent of damage to the building has not been independently verified, and Ukraine has not commented on the reported strike.

Russia’s Defence Ministry has previously acknowledged an increase in drone activity targeting Moscow, but said the capital remains “well protected” by layered air defence systems.

While Ukraine has regularly launched drone strikes against military and industrial infrastructure deep inside Russia, successful impacts on central residential areas of Moscow remain comparatively rare.

The timing of the reported strike is likely to heighten sensitivities in Moscow, coming just days before the Victory Day parade on Red Square — an event traditionally used to showcase Russia’s military capability and historical narrative of victory in the Second World War.

In recent days, Russian officials have already adjusted aspects of the parade, with some reports suggesting reductions in visible military hardware amid heightened security concerns.

The appearance of drones over central Moscow, if confirmed, will add to pressure on Russian air defences and further underline Ukraine’s expanding capability to reach high-value targets far from the front line.

As both sides increasingly rely on long-range drones and missiles, the war continues to extend beyond traditional battlefields — into cities, capitals and civilian spaces previously considered beyond reach.
