Mass gathering face cancellations for at least two months to include football matches, concerts and other sporting events to prevent the spread of coronavirus.
Professor Chris Whitty, chief medical officer, said there could be a “social cost” if coronavirus intensifies.
He said, “One of the things that’s really clear with this virus, much more so than flu, is that anything we do we’re going to have to do for quite a long period of time, probably more than two months.”
Euro 2020 football tournament as London’s Wembley stadium will take place in June and July, while Royal Ascot which attracts 300,000 people could be impacted.
Five Italian series A football matches are to be played behind closed doors rather then being cancelled.
Glastonbury Festival which takes place in June could also be impacted, and 135,000 tickets have already been sold.
