Britain braces for 40C heat as extreme temperatures threaten travel and health

Britain is preparing for one of its most intense heat events of the year, with the Met Office warning that temperatures could climb towards 40C in parts of southern England as a period of exceptional heat places pressure on households, transport networks and public services.

The weather agency has issued red extreme heat warnings covering parts of southern England and the south east, with forecasts suggesting some areas could reach 37C to 38C, with isolated locations potentially reaching 40C.

The warning covers a period of unusually high temperatures expected to persist through Wednesday and Thursday, with conditions remaining hot overnight and offering limited relief.

The Met Office said the affected regions are increasingly likely to experience a two to three-day period where maximum temperatures exceed 37C in the shade.

The extreme conditions are expected to disrupt daily life, with warnings of possible travel delays, pressure on infrastructure, and failures affecting heat-sensitive systems.

Transport operators are preparing for the impact of soaring temperatures, as intense heat can place additional strain on rail networks, roads and critical infrastructure.

Households have also been urged to take precautions, with health experts warning that the risks of extreme heat extend beyond traditionally vulnerable groups.

The Met Office has advised people to stay hydrated, avoid unnecessary exposure during the hottest parts of the day and take measures to keep homes as cool as possible.

The latest heatwave comes as climate-related temperature extremes become an increasing challenge for governments and businesses across Europe, forcing greater investment in resilience and adaptation.

For Britain, where infrastructure has historically been designed around a cooler climate, periods of extreme heat have highlighted vulnerabilities ranging from rail disruption to pressure on energy and water systems.

The current warning remains in place until Thursday, with forecasters expecting exceptionally warm conditions throughout both daytime and nighttime periods.

As temperatures approach levels once considered highly unusual in the UK, the latest heatwave is testing how prepared the country is for a hotter and more volatile climate.

It said: “Keep yourself safe by following these simple steps to reduce the likelihood of the heat making you feel unwell; drink plenty of fluids, keep out of the sun and avoid any exercise between 11am-3pm when the sun is strongest and close curtains in rooms that face the sun. If you are going out take water with you, stay in the shade, wear sunscreen and a wide brimmed hat.”
