William Hill the gambling company has announced they are planning to close 700 betting shops, most likely to start by the end of this year, putting 4,500 jobs at risk.

William Hill said the move follows the governments decision in April to reduce the minimum stakes on fixed odds to gaming machines to £2.

As a result of the governments decision they have seen a “significant fall” in revenues from gaming machines.

In a statement William Hill said, “The group will look to apply voluntary redundancy and redeployment measures extensively and will be providing support to all colleagues throughout the process.

“Subject to the outcome of the consultation process, shop closures are likely to begin before the end of the year.”
