US to send additional warships and fighter jets to Middle East over fears of a full-scale war

The Pentagon has announced that they are going to send an additional squadron of fighter jets and more warships to the Middle East to join the carrier strike group, over fears of all-out war in the region.

The Pentagon also said that they will increase the readiness to deploy additional land ballistic missile defences.

This will help bolster the 12 warships and the fighter jet squadron which was sent to the region last week in response to Iran threatening a military response to Israel over the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh last week in Tehran.

Last week Israeli citizens were told to “prepare their bomb shelters” and then on Sunday the Iranian backed militant group Hezbollah launched dozens of rockets to Israel from Lebanon.

Fears of a full-scale war with Israel and Iran grows, Israeli media reported that around 50 rockets were fired from southern Lebanon to Galilee.

Last week Israel conducted complex operations killing a senior Hezbollah commander, Fuad Shukr in Beirut, Lebanon and the assassination of the Hamas political chief Ismail Haniyeh.

The Israeli Defence Force (IDF) confirmed that “most” of the incoming “projectiles” were intercepted on Saturday night.

The US Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin is sending further destroyers and cruisers which will help to intercept and destroy incoming missiles and drones.

The Pentagon said in a statement, “Austin has ordered adjustments to US military posture designed to improve US force protection, to increase support for the defense of Israel, and to ensure the United States is prepared to respond to various contingencies.”

Last week US officials said they are expecting Iran to respond with a military attack on Israel in the coming days.

CNN reported that the Pentagon said Austin will be directing “multiple force posture moves” across the Middle East amid the expected Iranian military strike on Israel.

The deputy Pentagon press secretary Sabrina Singh said that Austin spoke to the Israeli Defence Minister on Friday, he “informed the minister of additional measures to include ongoing and future defense force posture changes that the department will take to support the defense of Israel.”

Singh added, “The secretary will be directing multiple forthcoming force posture moves to bolster force protection for US forces regionwide, to provide elevated support to the defense of Israel, and to ensure that the United States is prepared to respond to this evolving crisis.”
