Ukraine has attacked the Russian Druzhba pipeline which is one of the world’s largest oil pipelines, and Hungary relies on most the oil as well as Slovakia.

Ukraine launched a “large-scale” overnight attack on the oil refinery in the Volgograd region which caused an oil spill and a large blaze.

Regional Governor Andrey Bocharov said on Thursday, “Overnight, Russian Defence Ministry air defences repelled a large-scale UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle) assault on Volgograd Oblast.

“Debris from downed drones caused oil products to leak and ignite at the Volgograd Oil Refinery. Fire crews promptly began extinguishing the blaze.”

The oil refinery is operated by Lukoil which is one of the world’s largest companies for oil and gas production.

The attack has angered Budapest as the Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto said the Druzhba oil pipeline supplies Hungary with oil that is “vital” to their “energy security.”

Szijjarto said, “Hungary is Ukraine’s number one electricity supplier. Without us, the country’s energy security would be highly unstable.

“Given this, the Ukrainian attack on the Druzhba pipeline, which supplies Hungary with oil and is vital to our energy security, is outrageous.”
