The UK could experience a final spell of unusually warm weather later this month, with temperatures potentially approaching 30C in parts of England, according to weather forecasting models.
After weeks of temperatures largely in the low to mid-20s, cooler conditions and renewed rainfall have eased the heatwaves seen earlier this year. But forecasting maps indicate that warmer conditions could return towards the end of September.
Friday September 25 is currently projected to be the warmest day, with temperatures potentially reaching 29C around midday in eastern England. Much of central, eastern and southern England could see highs of about 27C.
By early evening, temperatures could reach 30C in parts of eastern England, with 28C to 29C possible across much of the rest of England. The forecasts suggest around 20 counties could record temperatures of at least 28C.
The projections would represent a notable departure from typical late-September conditions, although they remain subject to change as the date approaches.
The Met Office expects temperatures to remain broadly around seasonal averages towards the end of the month, while also forecasting some “rather warm days”.
The potential late-summer surge follows an exceptionally volatile year for UK weather, with periods of intense heat followed by cooler, wetter conditions.
The Met Office prediction for September 16 to 25 reads: “Remaining changeable, with occasional rain or showers arriving from the North Atlantic, most frequent across northern and western parts of the UK, where some strong winds will also be possible at times.”
Met Office added: “Wet, and in places windy, weather will move southeastwards across the UK on Saturday, followed by sunshine and showers. Drier for most on Sunday, though further rain arriving on Monday.”
