President Donald Trump increased tensions with Iran on Sunday by warning of imminent strikes against the country’s key infrastructure.
This warning aligns with Israel signalling its preparations for possible attacks on Iranian energy infrastructure.
“Tuesday will be Power Plant Day, and Bridge Day, all wrapped up in one, in Iran. There will be nothing like it!!! Open the f***ing Strait, you crazy bastards, or you’ll be living in Hell — JUST WATCH! Praise be to Allah,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform.
Trump’s announcement came after an earlier ultimatum he issued to Tehran, giving it 48 hours to reach a deal or face the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. This vital global shipping route has been mostly blocked since the start of the conflict.
He wrote: “Remember when I gave Iran ten days to MAKE A DEAL or OPEN UP THE HORMUZ STRAIT. Time is running out – 48 hours before all Hell will reign down on them. [sic] Glory be to GOD! President DONALD J. TRUMP”
Meanwhile, Israel seems to be considering its upcoming actions. A senior Israeli defence official told Reuters that Jerusalem is thinking about strikes on Iranian energy facilities but is awaiting a signal from Washington. Any such operation could take place within the next week.
Israeli forces have already targeted elements of Iran’s military-industrial network. On Saturday, the Israeli Defence Forces reported that the Israeli Air Force struck a petrochemical complex in Mahshahr, southwestern Iran.
This facility was used to produce materials for explosives and ballistic missiles and is believed to be one of two key locations involved in manufacturing a critical component of Iran’s missile programme. The strike is expected to disrupt the production of weapons intended for use against Israel.
The Strait of Hormuz, through which about one-fifth of the world’s oil passes, has already faced disruptions that have driven up energy prices and created economic uncertainty. Analysts warn that any further escalation could lead to serious global consequences.
