The United States has launched fresh strikes against Iranian military targets after Tehran’s attacks on US bases and vessels in the Middle East, deepening fears that the escalating conflict could spiral into a wider regional war.
United States Central Command said it struck “dozens” of Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) targets, including missile and drone facilities, command centres, coastal surveillance sites and maritime capabilities.
The strikes, which began on Wednesday evening and lasted around an hour, were described by Centcom as a “powerful response” to Iran’s recent attacks on American forces.
Iranian state media reported that three people, including a two-year-old child, were killed on Qeshm Island, with other strikes reported in southern and western areas of the country.
The latest exchange marks a dangerous new phase in a conflict that has already exceeded expectations.
When military operations against Iran were launched by the US and Israel in February, President Donald Trump predicted the fighting would last only weeks. Five months later, strikes and counterstrikes continue with no clear end in sight.

The escalation follows a brief period of relative calm as reports suggested diplomatic contacts had resumed. Trump described the discussions as “very friendly negotiations”, although Tehran denied talks were underway.
The US President had warned Iran of retaliation following a missile attack on a US base in Jordan, saying: “We’re going to be hitting them very hard because it’s our turn to hit them.”
Iran has also intensified its military response, with the IRGC claiming responsibility for attacks on US-linked targets and accusing Washington of aggression.
Jordan said its air defences intercepted five Iranian missiles aimed at the country, highlighting the growing risk that neighbouring states could be dragged further into the confrontation.

The fighting has also raised fresh concerns over energy security, with strikes hitting areas linked to Iran’s oil infrastructure, including Qeshm and Abadan.
Meanwhile, diplomatic efforts continue behind the scenes. Trump reportedly met Saudi Defence Minister Khalid bin Salman as Riyadh pushed for a reduction in tensions.
But with both sides exchanging increasingly forceful attacks, hopes of a rapid de-escalation are fading. The latest strikes underline a growing danger: a conflict that began with targeted military action is now threatening to become a prolonged regional confrontation.
