Trivago chief executive Axel Hefer has warned on Wednesday that the impact of strikes across the travel industry in Europe could cause chaos this summer.

Hefer told PA news agency if the current wave of strikes starts to become the “new norm,” then it could start to impact demand for overseas travel.

He said, “When you travel you need predictability and to know what your experience is going to be like.”

He added, “If this is the new norm with strikes coming out of nowhere, I think that will hurt the whole industry.

“More people will shift from going abroad to going domestic, which is something we saw during the pandemic.”

Over the coming weeks strike action is planned at Heathrow Airport as around 1,400 airport security guards will stage industrial action over the coronation over pay.

Across Europe and the UK airports and airlines will be hit with strike action over pay and the soaring cost of living.
