Starmer told now is ‘the right time’ to allow Kyiv to use long-range missiles amid UK’s new SPEAR missile

Vladimir Putin has been sent a stern message after the UK has successfully test fired a “cutting edge” new cruise missile.

The Defence Minister said on Monday the trial of the new SPEAR missile is “significant leap forward” for the British armed forces.

The successful trial of the SPEAR cruise missile comes at the “right time” as now the British Prime Minister should allow Ukraine to use the long-range Storm Shadow missiles to strike military targets inside Russia.

The US President Joe Biden has authorised Ukraine to use American supplied long-range missiles to be used to strike military targets deep inside Russia.

This marks a significant change in US policy and Ukraine will likely use the Army Tactical Missile Systems (ATACMS) to strike Russian and Noth Korean soldiers inside the Kursk region, a source told the New York Times.

Shadow Defence Secretary James Cartlidge told Sky News on Monday, “I welcome it very strongly. I think it’s important, and I hope it is a precursor to the UK granting full autonomy on use of Storm Shadow (missiles).”

Cartlidge said now is “the right time” for Keir Starmer to give permissions to Ukraine to use the long-range Storm Shadow missiles to strike military sites inside Russia.

He added, “Obviously these are complex matters.

“On this we had to move with the Americans, so I welcome the fact that the President has given this steer, and I hope it now leads to the UK doing the same.”

Armed Forces minister Luke Pollard saif this is a “significant leap forward” one which will “help protect our nation.”

Minister for the Armed Forces praised the breakthrough, Pollard said, “The successful trial of the pioneering SPEAR missile marks a significant leap forward in UK Armed Forces’ capabilities, ensuring our Royal Navy and Royal Air Force personnel are equipped with cutting-edge technology to protect our nation.”

Chris Moon, BAE Systems’ UK delivery director for Typhoon Capability, said: “This successful firing from Typhoon is as a result of the hard work and outstanding collaboration between MBDA, MoD and BAE Systems personnel over many months.”

Matthew Brown, SPEAR team leader at Defence Equipment & Support, described the test as “a key step on the way to delivering SPEAR to the UK frontline, where it will provide a new capability to defeat the most complex air defence systems.”
