Sir Keir Starmer has defended Rachel Reeves during Prime Minister’s Questions on Wednesday telling MPs in the House of Commons that she will remain the Chancellor “for many years to come.”

During a fiery clash between the Tory leader Kemi Badenoch and Starmer, she asked the Prime Minister if he will commit to only one Budget for 2025.

Badenoch said that as Starmer has full confidence in Reeves the markets are nervous and that there needs to be an “emergency Budget.”

Despite inflation fallen from 2.6% in November to 2.5% in December, the pound has fallen and the cost of borrowing continues to climb.

Badenoch told MPs, “The talk in the City is that she can’t meet her fiscal rules, and there will need to be an emergency budget.

“So does the Prime Minister stand by the Chancellor’s commitment that there will be only one budget this year?”

Starmer replied, “She’ll be pleased to know the Chancellor will be in place for many, many years to come. She’ll outstrip that.

“If we all thought that politics was about cheap words, I could criticise their chancellors, but I don’t have enough time to go through all the chancellors that they had.

“We had one budget, that’s what we’re committed to, strong fiscal rules, that’s what we’ll stick to, unlike the party opposite.”
