The US has warned that the stakes of Vladimir Putin’s war ‘stretch far beyond Ukraine” as they mark the first anniversary of the conflict.

The US Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin warned the conflict is the “most urgent danger to European security” since the Second World War and once again Europe is at war.

Austin said, “Today’s solemn anniversary is an opportunity for all who believe in freedom, rules, and sovereignty to recommit ourselves to supporting Ukraine’s brave defenders for the long haul – and to recall that the stakes of Russia’s war stretch far beyond Ukraine.”

Since February 2022 the US has sent $31 billion in defence aid to Kyiv and that the Biden administration will send drones and a “large amount” of artillery, mine clearing equipment and the 109 Bradley fighting vehicles and 31 Abrams tanks.

By the end of March a shipment of mobile generators will arrive and additionally on Friday the US Treasury has sanctioned a further 200 people and companies in the Middle East, Asia, Europe including Russia.
