NATO chief warns to ‘prepare for a long war’

The head of NATO has said that Ukraine and their allies have to “prepare for a long war” because most wars last longer than expected.

On Sunday NATO’s general secretary Jens Stoltenberg to Germany’s Funke media group in an interview “eventually” Ukraine will join the alliance.

Stoltenberg said, “Most wars last longer than expected when they first begin.

“Therefore, we must prepare ourselves for a long war in Ukraine.”

“We are all wishing for a quick peace. But at the same time, we must recognize: if President Zelensky and the Ukrainians stop fighting, their country will no longer exist.

“If President Putin and Russia lay down their weapons, we will have peace.”

In the interview Stoltenberg spoke of Ukraine joining NATO, he said, “There is no doubt that Ukraine will eventually be in NATO.”

“When this war ends, we need security guarantees for Ukraine. Otherwise, history could repeat itself,” he added.
