More than 1m people are set to be evacuated in the US as “one of the worst storms” is expected to hit the East Coast this week, experts warn.

President Donald Trump has also issued a warning on Twitter saying: ‘Please be prepared, be careful and be SAFE!’

Mandatory evacuations have been ordered in South Carolina, North Carolina and Virginia. The University of North Carolina at Wilmington has also ordered a mandatory evacuation of students.

Hurricane Florence is a Category Four storm, with sustained winds of about 140mph.

“We’ve got a major hurricane hitting the southeastern United States.… The potential there for catastrophic consequences definitely exists,” said Dennis Feltgen, a meteorologist and spokesperson with National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s National Hurricane Center (NHC).
