The Kremlin has slammed the Pentagon for providing Kyiv with a “free pass” to use US weapons to attack Crimea.

Crimea was annexed in 2014 and is one of Vladimir Putin’s most famed prizes which Moscow have claimed they will protect at all costs.

Pentagon spokesman Major General Pat Ryder said at a briefing that Ukrainian troops can strike military targets in Crimea as it is considered to part of Ukraine.

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov told reporters that allowing Kyiv to use US missiles to attack Crimea is “fraught with the most grave consequences.”

Ryabkov warned, “This is a reflection of their policy of encouraging Kiev, giving it a free pass for any crimes, any provocations, which are fraught with the most grave consequences in terms of the growing threats of a wider conflict.”

“The Pentagon has always positioned itself as a responsible agency, and this responsibility has now degenerated into this agency pushing the political leadership of its country towards taking actions that are difficult to predict in terms of what may follow,” the diplomat added.

Last week Ukraine launched an attack in Crimea which left more than 150 people injured and left many dead as shrapnel rained down on a beach in Sevastopol.
