Explosions roar across Russia as Ukraine unleashes massive drone strike

5th May 26 11:54 am

Ukraine has launched what appears to be one of its most extensive long-range drone and missile assaults to date, striking multiple targets deep inside Russian territory overnight into May 5, according to regional officials and local media reports.

Unverified footage circulating on social media appeared to show a large fire at the JSC VNIIR-Progress institute in Cheboksary, in Russia’s Chuvash Republic, roughly 1,200 kilometres from the Ukrainian border.

The facility is understood to be involved in producing electronic warfare components for Russian weapons systems.

Russian Telegram channels claimed the site had been hit by a Ukrainian FP-5 “Flamingo” missile, though this has not been independently confirmed. Local authorities reported subsequent drone activity in the area, with the governor stating that one person was injured.

The reported strikes form part of what Ukrainian sources describe as a broader campaign against Russia’s defence-industrial infrastructure.

The Cheboksary facility is believed to produce components linked to systems used in electronic warfare, including those deployed to disrupt GPS and radar guidance on Russian munitions.

Later in the morning, attention shifted to Russia’s energy sector, with reports of an attack on the Kirishi oil refinery in the Leningrad region—one of the country’s largest processing facilities. Regional officials said drones were intercepted over the area, while acknowledging that an industrial site had been targeted. NASA’s fire monitoring data indicated thermal anomalies in the vicinity, though the extent of any damage remains unclear.

President Volodymyr Zelensky wrote on X: “Our long-range sanctions continue to provide an entirely just response to Russian strikes.

“Last night, combat launches of F-5 Flamingo cruise missiles were carried out as part of the Armed Forces’ Deep Strike operation against several enemy targets, including military-industrial complex facilities in Cheboksary.

“The Ukrainian “Flamingos” covered a distance of more than 1,500 kilometers. The military production facility that was targeted produced relay protection systems, automation systems, and low-voltage equipment. The plant supplied navigation components for the Russian Navy, the missile industry, aviation, and armored vehicles.

“Everything that the Russians are using in the war against us — against Ukraine. Russia must end its war and turn to real diplomacy. We have made our proposal clear. Glory to Ukraine!”

Russian authorities claimed that hundreds of drones were downed across multiple regions overnight, including several approaching Moscow. Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said air defences intercepted devices near the capital, while temporary restrictions were imposed at several airports amid the scale of the alert.

Ukraine has not formally commented on the operation. However, Kyiv has previously signalled an intent to expand its long-range strike capability, increasingly targeting infrastructure far beyond the front lines in what it describes as legitimate military objectives supporting Russia’s war effort.

The reported escalation comes days ahead of Russia’s Victory Day commemorations on May 9, a period traditionally marked by heightened security and symbolic significance in Moscow.

The claims and footage circulating online have not been independently verified.
