A job advertisement offering a salary of  £168,000 has drawn attention after seeking a “quintessentially English” tutor for a young child in a wealthy Beijing household.

The listing, circulated via education recruitment channels, outlines a highly selective search for a female tutor described as “physically fit, outdoorsy, and energetic”, with a “sunny disposition” and a preference for “traditional values”.

The successful candidate would be responsible for the early education of a four-year-old boy and his one-year-old sister, working alongside a wider household team that includes nannies and drivers. The role also involves supporting the child’s development within a structured, multilingual environment.

The job listing states: “The family has expressed a preference for a female Tutor, at least in the early years of the engagement. The ideal candidate will be active, outdoorsy, and energetic, with a sunny disposition and a genuine enjoyment of working with young children.

“The tutor will be physically fit and healthy, a non-smoker. The family is conservative with traditional values and it is essential that the Tutor is similar in this regard.”, reports the Express.

The advert states the family is “conservative” and emphasises the importance of creating a “quintessentially English, yet bicultural” learning setting. While English language development is central, the role extends beyond classroom-style teaching into broader childcare and lifestyle guidance.

Applicants are also told that basic Mandarin knowledge would be useful for navigating the household, but that any such ability should not be actively disclosed to the older child in order to preserve an immersive English-speaking environment.

The child, described as “developmentally typical”, is said to have interests including animals, dinosaurs, vehicles and toy trains. He is also characterised as occasionally “standoffish” with new people, with the tutor expected to help build confidence and communication skills over time.

The role includes extensive travel, with the tutor accompanying the family on international trips and extended stays abroad. Holidays are included, though travel periods are described as continuing work commitments rather than downtime.

The posting highlights the family’s long-term ambitions for the child’s education, including plans that may involve study in the United States or an international equivalent.

The advert stresses discretion, cultural sensitivity and the ability to integrate into a “high-functioning, dynamic household”, with the tutor expected to coordinate closely with existing staff.

Applications are being handled through specialist recruitment channels, with a deadline of May 16.
