Ukrainian parliamentarians have reportedly floated an informal and highly unusual territorial concept dubbed “Donnyland”, in reference to US President Donald Trump, as part of wider discussions on the future status of territory in eastern Ukraine, according to reports.
The proposal, described as a conceptual rather than formal plan, is said to have emerged during negotiations concerning the conflict-affected Donbas region, where fighting and competing territorial claims remain unresolved.
The idea reportedly combines the name “Donbas” with the US president’s name, and was discussed as an informal attempt to draw greater American attention and involvement in stalled diplomatic efforts.
The discussions were not included in any official negotiating documents and did not form part of any agreed framework, sources indicated.
The notion of attaching Donald Trump’s name to geopolitical initiatives is not unprecedented. In Poland, proposals for a US military installation once led to informal references to “Fort Trump”, while similar branding ideas have surfaced in other diplomatic contexts.
The latest reports come amid continued deadlock over the status of eastern Ukrainian territories, where Kyiv and Moscow remain fundamentally divided.
Ukraine continues to insist on maintaining sovereignty over its territory while considering various governance models, including demilitarised arrangements for certain regions. Russia, meanwhile, continues to demand full control over parts of Donbas, leaving negotiations at an impasse.
The reports also note that Ukrainian officials have been urging Washington to maintain pressure on Russia, including sanctions targeting its energy sector, as part of broader diplomatic efforts linked to the wider conflict environment.
In parallel, Ukrainian representatives have signalled openness to a potential high-level meeting involving President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Russian president Vladimir Putin, and Donald Trump in Türkiye, should such a format emerge as part of future talks.
However, despite the flurry of informal ideas and diplomatic signalling, the core territorial dispute remains unresolved, with little concrete progress made on the most contentious issues.
