Chapel Down cheers sales rise in English wine

Chapel Down England’s largest winemaker has reported another year of sales success as the company has invested in measures to increase production.

Sales for 2018 were up by 10% to £13m, wine and spirits turnover rose by 11% to £8.98m, while the beer and cider division was up by 10% to just over £4m. Like-for-like underlying earnings grew by 18% to £1.14m.

The winemaker acquired an additional 388 acres of prime vineyard land that will produce around one million extra bottles of wine per annum.

The company also completed construction of a brewery for their Curious Brew brand that will help to grow production.

Frazer Thompson chief executive said the UK remains their key market and are developing to become a player with serious potential in growth markets,” in targeting the US and other countries.

Thompson added, “The launch of Kits Coty premium wines and the consumer and trade interest in Chapel Down will continue to fuel the English wine market, interest in which shows no signs of abating, and we are planting for the future.

“We remain appropriately optimistic about continuing growth in sales in 2019.”
