A council in England declares ‘cost of crisis has become an emergency’ due to government ‘inaction’

A council in England has declared an “emergency” over the cost of living and has warned that “parents are skipping meals all the time so their kids can eat.”

Eastbourne Borough Council which is The Liberal Democrat-run local authority are to call for a motion in the House of Commons in a “wake up call” for Boris Johnson.

The Trussell Trust network have said that the Eastbourne foodbank has been the busiest in the UK as they gave 17,440 emergency food parcels per 100,000 population in 2021.

The Independent reported that Councillor Josh Babarinde who announced the “emergency” claims this will help the Council to work more effectively with charities.

He said, “We need immediate action from the government – they have to realise that this cost of crisis has become an emergency because of their inaction.

“People are coming to me every day saying, ‘I don’t know how I’m going to get by,’ there are parents who are skipping meals all the time so their kids can eat.”

The Lib Dems motion will also call for the Commons to bring in a windfall tax on gas and oil giants as they have been announcing multi-million pound profits.
