Bordeaux wildfire enters a dangerous new phase as ‘fire clouds’ intensify crisis

The wildfire threatening France’s Bordeaux region has entered a more dangerous and unpredictable phase after generating a rare “fire cloud” capable of creating its own weather system and accelerating the spread of the blaze.

Authorities say the fire has produced a pyrocumulonimbus cloud—a phenomenon more commonly associated with major volcanic eruptions and the world’s largest wildfires. Formed by intense heat rising from the flames, the towering clouds can generate powerful winds, lightning and rapidly changing fire conditions.

Officials in Gironde described the development as a turning point in the battle against the blaze.

We realised we were entering a new dimension,” said Sophie Brocas, the prefect of Gironde, warning that the clouds can create thunderstorms whose lightning ignites fresh fires while strong winds fan existing flames.

The wildfire, which has forced thousands of people to evacuate, is burning through one of Europe’s largest forested regions, providing abundant fuel for the advancing fire front.

Local officials say the blaze, now approaching the outskirts of the Bordeaux metropolitan area, is behaving erratically, complicating firefighting efforts.

Jerome Steffe, mayor of Cestas, described it as a wildfire “of a size never seen before” and warned that firefighters are racing against time before another spell of extreme heat arrives.

Forecasts suggest temperatures could climb to 38C later this week, raising fears that drier conditions and stronger winds will intensify an already volatile situation.

The emergence of fire-generated weather systems illustrates how increasingly severe wildfires are becoming more complex natural disasters, capable not only of spreading rapidly but also of creating atmospheric conditions that make them significantly harder to predict and contain.
