Ukraine on the frontline in the Middle East against Iranian drones

As the crisis in the Middle East intensifies, Ukraine is stepping forward to share its valuable battlefield expertise.

President Volodymyr Zelensky has disclosed that a coalition of 11 countries—comprising not only Iran’s neighbouring nations but also the United States and several European countries—has formally sought Ukrainian assistance to mitigate the threats posed by Shahed drones and other aerial attacks.

In response to these calls for help, Kyiv is planning to deploy a team of military specialists to the region.

These experts will focus on training allied forces and sharing combat tactics that have been refined through years of experience in their ongoing war against Russian drone technology.

The training is expected to cover various aspects, including drone detection, interception strategies, and effective offensive measures against aerial threats.

“Problem is complex: all these events in the Middle East and the Gulf region directly affect Europe, and in particular Ukraine, other parts of the world, critically important supplies to Ukraine, security and well-being of our people,” the president’s statement said.

Ukraine has already begun fulfilling some of these requests, including negotiations to sell its advanced interceptor drones to both the United States and Qatar. These drones are designed to enhance defensive capabilities and could prove critical in the ongoing battle against aerial surveillance and attacks.

“As of now, there are 11 requests from countries — neighbours of Iran, European states, and America. There is clear interest in the Ukrainian experience in protecting lives, relevant interceptors, electronic warfare systems, training,” Zelensky confirmed.

President Zelenskyy made it clear that, while seeking international support, Ukraine’s own national defence will remain a top priority.

The government aims to strike a careful balance, ensuring that assistance to its allies does not weaken its ability to protect its own territory. The primary objective, as outlined by Zelenskyy, is to hinder the Iranian regime from gaining a strategic advantage in the region, which could lead to further instability.

“National Security and Defence Council of Ukraine, together with General Staff and Defence Forces, will determine which other requests to our state we can respond to positively — in a way that does not reduce our own ability to defend ourselves,” Zelensky insisted.

Experts are optimistic that Ukraine’s extensive experience in drone warfare and its successful defensive strategies could provide pivotal support in reducing threats, ultimately saving lives across both Europe and the Middle East.

Ukraine has long offered partners to update and strengthen joint capabilities to protect life. We talked about joint defence against drones and missiles, and about destruction of corresponding production facilities of aggressor regimes — weapons production used, including now in strikes,” he said.

As this collaboration develops, it may reshape the landscape of military cooperation and defence strategies in response to emerging challenges.
