Trump risks all-out war in the Middle East as paratroopers to be deployed to Iran

Plans by Donald Trump to deploy elite US paratroopers to seize Kharg Island risk triggering a full-scale Middle East war, as the conflict with Iran enters a dangerous new phase.

The Pentagon is preparing to deploy an additional 3,000 troops to the Middle East as tensions with Iran continue to escalate.

These reinforcements, expected to come from the elite 82nd Airborne Division, could be ordered within hours, according to U.S. officials cited by The Wall Street Journal and Reuters.

This deployment would represent a significant increase in America’s military presence in the region. Earlier this month, reports indicated that 5,000 Marines and sailors, along with an amphibious assault ship, were already being sent.

Officials have described these deployments as part of contingency planning in response to the widening conflict. However, there are growing concerns that this military buildup could signal preparations for a larger confrontation.

The strategic island, which handles around 90% of Iran’s oil exports, has emerged as a potential flashpoint in Washington’s efforts to weaken Tehran’s economy.

Military planners are reportedly considering deploying the 82nd Airborne Division, a rapid-response force capable of launching parachute assaults deep into hostile territory.

Such a move would represent a dramatic escalation from airstrikes to boots on the ground, raising fears of confrontation not only with Iran but with its regional allies.

Analysts warn that targeting Kharg Island could provoke retaliatory strikes across the Gulf, threaten global energy supplies, and draw neighbouring states into open conflict.

The island’s strategic importance compounds the risks. Any disruption to its operations would reverberate through global oil markets, potentially sending prices soaring and intensifying economic pressure worldwide.

The nearby Strait of Hormuz — through which roughly a fifth of global oil supplies pass — could also be imperilled, raising the prospect of a wider energy crisis.

Thousands of US Marines are already moving into the region, with military sources suggesting they could be deployed first to secure infrastructure and repair damaged facilities, including Kharg Island’s airstrip, before airborne units follow. While officials describe the planning as “prudent”, no final decision has been taken.

President Trump has publicly refused to confirm whether ground forces will be used, calling it a “crazy question” to answer. At the same time, he has spoken of achieving a “complete and total resolution” to the conflict, while warning that if negotiations fail, the US will continue its bombing campaign.

Tehran, however, has dismissed claims that talks are underway, insisting there is no contact with Washington. Iranian officials have also signalled they would respond forcefully to any attempt to seize key infrastructure, raising the stakes of any potential operation.

Military experts warn that even a limited assault could spiral rapidly. An attack on Kharg Island would not only strike at the heart of Iran’s economy but could also trigger asymmetric retaliation, including missile and drone attacks on US bases and allies across the region.

With tensions already at a breaking point, the deployment of paratroopers risks becoming a tipping point — transforming a contained conflict into a far wider and more destructive Middle East war.
