The EU issues a warning to Trump they are ‘ready to defend’ Greenland

30th Jan 25 4:25 pm

The US President Donald Trump has been issued with a stern warning that the EU is “ready to defend” Greenland.

President Trump believes that the US is “going to have it” and has not ruled out taking Greenland by military force.

Trump has said that with Denmark standing in his way from being allowed to have the territory is “a very unfriendly act… because it’s for the protection of the free world.”

North Atlantic Danish dependency, EU Commissioner for Defence and Space Andrius Kubilius pledged, “We are ready to defend our member state, Denmark.”

France’s Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot has said that they stand in “solidarity” and that “France will be there” to help protect Greenland from the US.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said on Tuesday after a meeting with the Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, that “Borders may not be moved by force: To whom it may concern.”

Scholz added, “The inviolability of borders is a fundamental principle of international law. The principle must apply to all.”

“It is up to Europe to define the future of our continent,” Frederiksen said.

Last weekend Trump said, “I think we’re going to have it [Greenland].

“I don’t really know what claim Denmark has to it, but it would be a very unfriendly act if they didn’t allow that to happen because it’s for the protection of the free world.”

On Tuesday, the Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen and the Defence Minister Lund Poulsen has said this is no chance that the US President Donald Trump will “get Greenland” even if he did invade the country.

The Ritzau news agency reported Lokke Rasmussen said, “Trump will not get Greenland. Greenland is Greenland and the Greenlandic people are people, also in terms of international law.

“This is also why we have said time and again that it is ultimately Greenland that decides Greenland’s situation.”

Speaking to Denmark Radio he was asked if Trump will invade the country, Lokke Rasmussen said, “He will not get Greenland. And that’s why I shouldn’t stand here and give advice on how he can take something away, something he shouldn’t do.”

Denmark’s European allies have discussed placing soldiers on the ground in Greenland, the French Foreign Minister, Jean-Noel Barrot said.

Barrot said, “Why not, since it is a matter of security,” he added, it “is not the wish expressed by Denmark, but it is a possibility.”

Austrian general Robert Briegeer, who heads the EU’s military committee, told the German World on Sunday, sending EU troops to Greenland would send a “strong signal” to the US President.

He added, “In my view, it would make sense not only to station US troops in Greenland, as before but also to consider stationing EU soldiers there.”
