Following the assassination of Igor Krillov the former Tory MP Tobias Ellwood has said this an “embarrassment” for Vladimir Putin

Ellwood told Sky News, “It’s a major event, the removal of a senior military officer responsible for nuclear weapons, not on the battlefield in Ukraine, but in Moscow, just miles from the Kremlin.

“This will be is an embarrassment for Putin.

“He cannot hide this from the Russian people who are generally not supportive of this war and I would expect a major retaliation on the Russian side.”

Russia’s Investigative Committee said on Telegram, “Investigators, criminalists and operational services are working at the scene of the accident,” it said on Telegram.

“Investigative actions and operational-research measures aimed at establishing all the circumstances of the committed crime are carried out.”

The deputy chairman of Russia’s security council Dmitry Medvedev told RIA Novosti, “The military-political leadership of the Kyiv regime will face inevitable retribution for the murder of Kirillov.

“Realising the inevitability of its military defeat, it launches cowardly and despicable strikes in peaceful cities.”

Russian foreign ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said, the General had been “systematically exposing the crimes of the Anglo-Saxons with facts in hand”.

“He worked fearlessly. He did not hide behind people’s backs,” she added.

“He met problems head on. For the Motherland, for the truth. Bright be his memory.”
