Keeping our valuables safe is important. It’s not just about preventing expensive or rare items from potentially getting stolen; it’s also about ensuring our most precious belongings, such as old family heirlooms, are protected from our children or pets who may get ahold of them and damage them, whether it be intentionally or accidentally.
That said, the placement of valuables in your own home is everything. If you’re looking to hide or protect your most valuable possessions, here are some clever places to consider:
- Underneath a table
Flatter items are super easy to attach to the underside of a table with a bit of tape or strong glue. This will work wonderfully, as long as the table isn’t too tall and is large enough so that a knee or hand sweeping the bottom of the table wouldn’t accidentally come across the hidden item.
- Inside an empty, labeled can
Cans of food don’t look suspicious at all. In fact, they aren’t quite appealing nor are they considered valuable to the average thief. That said, nobody would think to go near a can of food just for kicks. Do you see where this is going?
In a clean, still-labeled can of food, place the valuable(s) that you want to hide. Seal it back up or replace the top if possible. For best results, store the can in a regular cabinet or kitchen shelf, as if it’s an actual food item. (Just don’t get it mixed up when cooking!) Placing it in a bedroom closet, however, could look mighty suspicious.
- Behind a secret bookcase
If you have the extra money, one of the best hiding spots would be behind a secret bookshelf door. What exactly is this contraption, you might ask? It’s exactly what it sounds like: a bookcase that opens like a door, revealing a secret wall or room where you can stash your most valuable possessions.
- Under a mattress
This one is a bit of a classic hiding spot, so it may not work when trying to hide a possession from a potential thief, but it can certainly get the job done if you’re trying to hide an item from a pet or small child.
Some popular items to hide under a mattress include money, one’s social security card, expensive jewelry or a nice watch, or important legal paperwork.
- Behind a framed picture
For lightweight, flatter objects like money, jewelry, or old family photographs, hiding them behind a framed picture on a wall is a great idea. You can either attach the items directly to the back of the framed picture or to the wall itself where the picture frame will be covering them.
Unless the picture falls off the wall or gets removed, the hidden object will likely never be found. At the same time, if you ever go to move homes and remove the frame from the wall during the moving process, you’ll be able to recover your hidden valuables, even if you long forgot about them.
- In a safe
This one is a bit more of an obvious hiding spot for valuables, but it’s surely an important consideration. Safes can be small and portable, heavy and massive, or even built inside a wall. Even though safes are evident places to hide something of value, they’re surely not easy to break into.
Not to mention, these days, there are so many different safe options, including ones that are discreet. So, not only will they not be super visible to the naked eye, but they will also have the proper protection just in case they do happen to be spotted.
- Under a false bottom drawer
You don’t have to be a construction pro to make this hiding spot work in your home. Creating a simple false bottom for one of your drawers is so cheap and easy that even a rookie could do it!
The goal with this suggestion is to place your valuables under the false bottom you create, then place your regular items on top of the false bottom to make your drawer look like it doesn’t contain valuable items at all. Talk about smart and sneaky!
- In a shoe
If you need a quick hiding spot for a smaller item, especially while traveling or staying the night at someone else’s home, then hiding the object inside your shoe can be a creative idea. After all, most people don’t want to go near anyone else’s shoes! Talk about yuck.
But if you fear that someone may check inside your shoe, then you can always hide it underneath the shoe’s interior foam pad if it’s removable.
Small, flat items can also be hidden in your shoe while you’re still wearing the shoes, making them a great, hands-free way to keep a valuable item safe.
- Inside a fake plumbing pipe
Plumbing pipes are relatively cheap and easy to come by, and most importantly, easy to put together, particularly if you’re creating a hiding spot for a valuable.
Your primary goal with this project is to piece together several plumbing pipes and attach them to an area of your home to make it look as if the plumbing pipes are legit. In reality, you’d be using these false pipes to stash some of your most important, small valuables inside of.
- Buried in a plant pot
If you don’t mind getting your hands a little dirty, then a plant pot might be a great place to hide a possession inside of. As long as the possession is waterproof, or at least made waterproof via proper protection, then this will be an excellent place to keep a valuable safe. But beware if you have a pet dog as they might just dig it up! (If you know, you know.)
Conclusion
Not everything is meant to be visible in plain sight. Sometimes the items that mean the most to us are best preserved and kept safe when they are properly hidden. From hiding an item behind a framed picture to sneaking some valuables behind a secret bookcase, there are endless creative places to hide a possession of your choice.
