Israel demands Sir Keir Starmer to take urgent action to protect Britain’s Jewish community following a stabbing in north London, as the Prime Minister faced abuse on the streets of the capital.

The intervention from the Israeli government came after two Jewish men were injured in a knife attack in Golders Green on Wednesday, an incident now being treated as a potential terror attack by counter-terrorism police.

In a strongly worded statement, Israel’s foreign ministry called on the UK to “act decisively and urgently” to confront what it described as a worsening climate of antisemitism.

The statement reads: “After attacks on synagogues, Jewish institutions, community ambulances and now Jews targeted in Golders Green, the UK Government can no longer claim this is under control.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s statements are no substitute for confronting the roots of antisemitism festering across United Kingdom.

British Jews should not need security patrols and emergency volunteers to live openly as Jews. Enough words.”

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also criticised what he called Britain’s “weakness” in tackling antisemitic incidents, accusing authorities of failing to properly respond to repeated attacks targeting Jewish communities.

Tensions were further inflamed later on Wednesday evening when demonstrators gathered in Golders Green, waving British and Israeli flags while chanting slogans directed at the Prime Minister, including “Keir Starmer, Jew-harmer” and calls for the proscription of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

The protest came hours after the stabbing, which left a 34-year-old man and a 76-year-old man injured. Both were taken to the hospital and are reported to be recovering.

Speaking from his hospital bed, one of the victims said he felt the Government was failing to protect the community, adding that recent months had seen a rise in attacks against visibly Jewish people.

He described surviving the assault as a “miracle” and said he feared the situation was escalating.

The suspect, a 45-year-old Somali-born British national, was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and remains in custody. Counter-terrorism officers are leading the investigation.

Sir Keir said he was “deeply concerned” by the attack and confirmed he would visit the area “as soon as possible”, adding that the incident was not isolated.

He chaired an emergency Cobra meeting on Wednesday afternoon with senior police officials, ministers and the Mayor of London.

Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch also visited the scene, calling the recent wave of attacks on Jewish communities a “national emergency” and urging tougher measures to prevent further violence.

The incident has intensified political pressure on the Government, with calls growing for stronger action against extremist threats and better protection for vulnerable communities across the capital.
