Online sales at J Sainsbury have more than doubled, with the supermarket chain delivering more than 650,000 orders a week.

Like-for-like sales across the group, which also owns Argos, rose 8.2% in the 16 weeks to June 27. Food sales were up 10.5%. Argos also benefited from the lockdown with a 10.7% rise in sales.

Simon Roberts, the newly appointed chief executive, who took over from Mike Coupe last month said, “Our business has changed fundamentally from four months ago. The coming weeks and months will continue to be challenging for our customers and our colleagues and we do not expect the current strong sales growth to continue.”
