Russia to change the use of nuclear weapons response to ‘sober up’ the West

2nd Sep 24 2:39 pm

Russia has issued a warning to the West they are making changes in their doctrine to the use of nuclear weapons.

The Kremlin is to make the changes in their nuclear doctrine amid the escalation of the West helping Ukraine with billions of dollars’ worth of military equipment and sharing battlefield intelligence reports to Kyiv.

In 2020 Vladimir Putin set the current nuclear doctrine which means if his red line of a conventional attack on Russian territory, a threat against the state or in the event of a nuclear attack Moscow will respond with nuclear weapons.

When Putin invaded Ukraine on 24 February 2022 he warned that any country who interferes with his attack will suffer “consequences that you have never faced in your history,” threatening a nuclear strike.

Euractiv reported that in June this year Putin said Russia’s nuclear doctrine is a “living” document, but so far he has failed to adhere to his own doctrine as Ukraine invaded the Kursk region inside Russia on 6 August.

Some senior Russian military figure heads are calling on the Kremlin leader to lower the nuclear threshold in an attempt to “sober up” Western leaders.

The Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said on Sunday that changes to Russia’s doctrine over the use of nuclear weapons will be made.

Tass cited he said, “The work is at an advanced stage, and there is a clear intent to make corrections,” this decision is “connected with the escalation course of our Western adversaries” by helping Ukraine.

He added, “The time for completing this work is a rather difficult question, given that we are talking about the most important aspects of ensuring our national security.”

The Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that the West has “gone too far” and Russia will protect their territory.
