For new freelancers, especially those arriving from overseas or are looking to move to the capital, getting started can often feel a little overwhelming.
LondonFreelancers.co.uk, a new start-up connecting businesses with trusted freelancers and consultants, is organising bi-monthly webinars as well as regular in-person meetups in London in order to, help freelancers navigate the practical steps of self-employment, and build stronger links within London’s freelance community.
These webinars are titled “How to Get Started as a Freelancer in London in Just 24 Hours.” Designed for new and aspiring freelancers based in or around London, as well as those planning to relocate, they explore the most important early steps involved in getting set up and understanding what comes next.
Markus Scheingraber, digital marketing expert and co-founder of London Freelancers, says: “We aim to make the first steps into freelancing in London feel clearer, more practical and less intimidating, especially for people who may be unfamiliar with the UK system.”
Questions around tax registration, legal status, deadlines and compliance are often the first barrier. Before a freelancer has even found their first client, they can find themselves stuck in bureaucratic quicksand, trying to understand how to register as self-employed with HMRC, apply for a Unique Taxpayer Reference, manage Self-Assessment and avoid missing key deadlines.
Moreover, in-person meetups are organised for freelancers and digital nomads, giving them opportunities to socialise and network. These events are currently held in charming pubs across different neighbourhoods in the city. In future, more activities are planned, including coworking sessions, lunch meetups and small neighbourhood visits to help people discover some of the best areas in London for digital nomads.
