A new Covid variant which has spread to Europe is putting holidays at risk and scientists have warned the government this new mutant strain could be resistant to vaccines.
The new Nepal variant of Covid is believed to have originated in Nepal which borders China, the Daily Mail has reported.
Tory peer Baroness Ruby McGregor-Smith, chairperson of the Airport Operators’ Association, said, “How many more variants have we got to be worried about?
“What matters is data and the success of our vaccination programme.”
On Thursday the government will be announcing which countries will be added to the red, amber and green travel list, with the later meaning you do not have to self-isolate.
Portugal could be taken off the government’s green trave list today over fears the Nepal variant could have spread there.
If Portugal is taken off the greent list today then it could be until at least August that Brits would be allowed to travel there.
A member of the government’s SAGE committee told the Daily Mail, “There are thousands of variants. This is a virus that is changing all the time.”
