The former Prime Minister Boris Johnson has warned that the UK might have to “send British troops to Ukraine” to defend Europe is the US stops crucial aid to Kyiv.
It is not known what Donald Trump will do with Ukraine once he takes office in January but there have been rumours coming out of the Trump camp there could be a cut in funding to end the war.
Johnson also said that should Vladimir Putin gain the upper hand in the war then this could also trigger British troops being sent to Ukraine.
Speaking to GB News Johnson said, “If Ukraine goes down, then we face an even bigger threat on our borders, the borders of the European continent wherever the democracies butt up against Russia.”

Should Kyiv fall then the ripple effects will be felt in the Baltic states and the South China Sea.
“Let me give the financial argument for why that’s a good investment of public funds, why protecting democracy in Ukraine is actually a sensible investment,” Johnson told GB News.
The former Prime Minister added, “What I’m saying is for people watching, thinking ‘why are we supporting the Ukrainians?’
“It’s because otherwise our collective security will be really degraded by a resurgent Russia threatening all sorts of parts of Europe, and we will then have to pay to send British troops to help defend Ukraine.”
Speaking about Trump and his stance on Ukraine he said, “Donald Trump has lots of different voices in his ears and there’s a front of the Republican Party, quite a lot of them actually, who take the wrong line on Ukraine.”
“This is the same Trump who made a huge difference to the fortunes of Ukraine when he authorised the supply of the javelin shoulder launched anti-tank weapons,” he added.
Furthermore, under Trump’s alleged peace plan for Putin’s war against Ukraine British forces could be sent to enforce the buffer zone on Kyiv’s 800 miles frontline.
It is understood Trump has told his office that European troops will operate on the buffer zone and Washington will pull out all US forces and equipment once the lines are frozen and the war has come to an end.
Trump’s team told the Wall Street Journal last week, “We can do training and other support but the barrel of the gun is going to be European. We are not sending American men and women to uphold peace in Ukraine.
“And we are not paying for it. Get the Poles, Germans, British and French to do it,” The Telegraph reported.
