Tui chief executive Friedrich Joussen has said that British holidaymakers are put off making bookings as they face constant uncertainty over the government’s travel restrictions.
Joussen said, “You had Portugal on the green list and then Portugal off the green list, so the predictability of decisions I think was not very high.”
“When you change the programme so often, then people cancel,” he added.
The UK’s largest travel operator revealed data on Thursday which shows all but a handful of days since mid-January that more cancellations were made for the summer of 2021 than was booked.
Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands saw the most cancellations throughout this period Tui data revealed.
Joussen said, “The difference between the UK and the other countries is a little bit of the uncertainty.”
Revenue had rose by more than 800% to €649.7m in the third quarter of this year, compared to the same period in 2020.
Tui said that earnings before income taxes narrowed from €1.5bn to €846.9m.
