British street artist Banksy shocked the world when he pulled off one of the most elaborate and spectacular pranks on Friday night.
Banksy’s iconic painting “Girl With Balloon” shows a girl reaching out to a red heart-shaped balloon. It was up for auction at Sotheby’s Auction House in London this weekend when within seconds of being sold for a record-breaking £1,042,000, the painting was shredded into ribbons.
Alex Branczik, Sotheby’s senior director and head of contemporary art, Europe London, said: “It appears we just got Banksy-ed.”

Banksy built a shredder into the frame of his painting to shred it if it ever went up for auction.
It just did. And he did. 😱 pic.twitter.com/2UgH8wOAmq

We've had a number of #Banksy print owners contact us today asking if they shred their artwork will it be worth more. Please, Please DON'T. The events of the last 24hrs are a very unique piece of art history. #GirlWithBalloon
