Just after Donald Tusk told reporters that EU leaders believe Theresa May’s so-called Chequers plan for Brexit would undermine the EU single market and “will not work”, Prime Minister has now clarified that her Chequers plan is not dead and claimed that EU leaders were engaging in “negotiating tactics”.
“I have always said these negotiations were going to be tough,” May told reporters, adding: “And at various stages of these negotiations, tactics would be used as part of those negotiations.”
In a serious blow to May, Donald Tusk had told reporters in the Austrian city of Salzburg: “Everybody shared the view that while there are positive elements in the Chequers proposal, the suggested framework for economic co-operation will not work, not least because it is undermining the single market”
