On Saturday the French authorities have banned all public gatherings that holds 5,000 people or more as coronavirus cases rapidly rise.
The French health ministry confirmed 19 new cases late Friday almost a 100% increase from Thursday, health officials have warned cases are climbing across Europe.
France now has 57 confirmed coronavirus cases and French health officials said an epidemic is now imminent.
French Health Minister Olivier Véran said, “We are preparing for an epidemic
“We are now moving to stage two. The virus is circulating in our country and we must stop its spread.”
Authorities said on Saturday that they are struggling to identify the source of an outbreak in north Paris.
French authorities said they are paying particular attention to links between Creil military base and Charles de Gaule Airport, which is one of the busiest airports in Europe.
Xavier Lescure, an infectious disease specialist at Bichat hospital, one of the three designated coronavirus treatment hospitals in the Paris region, told Le Monde, “We are facing an epidemic that will affect the whole system and will very quickly impose a reorganization of care.”
he United Nations chief, Antonio Guterres is urging governments to “do everything possible.”
The UN chief told reporters in New York, “We know containment is possible, but the window of opportunity is narrowing.”
