Angela Rayner emerges as favourite to replace Starmer

Angela Rayner has emerged as the leading candidate to succeed Sir Keir Starmer as Prime Minister, according to bookmakers, following a surge of bets over the past 24 hours.

Rayner is currently rated at 9/4 to replace Starmer, with 67% of the recent wagers backing her.

The former Deputy Prime Minister, who was removed from her position earlier this year, has largely avoided public criticism of the Labour leadership—until Tuesday.

Speaking to party activists, she warned that Labour is increasingly viewed as “the establishment, not working people,” marking a rare and pointed challenge to Starmer’s authority.

Political analysts suggest that Rayner’s comments may signal the beginning of her bid for party leadership.

Sir Keir has faced mounting pressure amid persistently poor polling and internal unrest, with some party members openly questioning whether Labour remains aligned with its traditional voter base.

A source close to Rayner stated, “Angela is positioning herself as the candidate who will reconnect Labour with ordinary voters. This is clearly a statement of intent.”

The rise in betting activity reflects increasing speculation that Rayner, who has long been seen as a loyal ally, could now become Labour’s challenger in a more volatile political landscape.
